About

The inspiration for any painting is the subject. The interest and motivation comes from within the artist, which is the talent that some call a “gift.” These can mature, be developed, and refined through continual application. Some would look within for inspiration and not find any. I look without, to the people I encounter. Therefore, I never run out of inspiration since natural beauty is what I appreciate. To express this high level of appreciation, I choose paint. Cultural fads, such as tattoos, piercings, heavy makeup, and artificial enhancements “dis-inspire” me while those who show respect for themselves spark my respect.

I have known Acacia's grandparents and great-grandparents for the half century that we've lived in Cleveland. I've been acquainted with her mother since childhood and have always appreciated her father, Guy, who is of Hawaiian descent.

Acacia was raised in Pittsburgh so I missed her early childhood. Her older sister produced a drawing in my studio while staying at our home. Sadly, her father contracted a malignant brain tumor and suffered with it for several years. Although their family was in Pittsburgh, we often supported him in prayer.

The painting of Acacia was a tribute to her love for and loss of her dear father. Her expression has everything to do with this tragedy although she maintains a beautiful smile.

The composition consists mainly of red and green with accents of black and a touch of blue. I chose this complex blouse and the Japanese red maple in the background along with the carnations she is holding and the irises on either side. Acacia is seated on the stump of a fallen tree.

I signed her portrait with I Peter 3:4 which says, “Let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” This verse describes Acacia.
