"My attendance policy
is very generous to
ensure that if you sign
up for ten classes, you
will benefit from all of
them...you may make
up that class at the
end of your set."
"The artistic procedures that
you will learn are logical,
teachable, applicable, and
repeatable."
I founded the Westlake School of Portraiture in 1983 because I felt I had
the responsibility to pass on all I had learned and experienced throughout
several decades of being successfully self-employed and self- directed.
Since moving to Ohio in 1975, I received numerous requests to teach.
In response, I lectured and demonstrated for art leagues, taught classes
at a private elementary school, and was a drawing and painting instructor
at the Cooper School of Art and Design. I now offer each Wednesday
evening and Thursday and Saturday mornings. I freely share whatever
knowledge may benefit each student, withholding no “professional secrets.”
Class size is relatively small, ensuring that I render personal help to individuals of all ages.

If you choose to join my class, you are the artist. I will never deface your artwork by drawing or painting
on it directly. Instead, I will demonstrate graphically and/or show examples to raise the quality and
accuracy of your art to a professional level. I will strive to impart to you a thorough understanding of the
medium you are working with and the subject you are portraying. This will strengthen your personal
direction.

My over thirty years of teaching experience will prove to be
a help to you. I will thoroughly define every term that I use.
Learning and development take place as you receive
constructive help while you draw and paint. You will also
learn from your fellow students as their portraits develop.
You will have the additional benefit of coming into my studio
each week and watching the progress I am making on my own portraits. What I present in class is exactly
what I myself do to produce high quality artwork. When my students apply the same approach, they are
also able to create outstanding realism. My gratification as a teacher is to watch you blossom and produce
excellence beyond your age and experience level.

The artistic procedures that you will learn are logical, teachable, applicable, and repeatable. I teach an
aesthetic science, and the classes that I offer are unique in art education, for I find that art generally is not
taught. Rather it is assigned, criticized, and graded. Students are often told, “Just do it,” which is of little
or no value. The projects you will create in my classroom are self-assigned. I ask that you bring a large,
clear photograph of a person or other subject matter you would like to draw to your first class. I will
provide everything else that you need to get started, including an easel, stool, proper lighting, paper,
drawing pencils, and blending tools. You will find that in place of grades you will soon see excellent results,
and instead of criticism you will receive constructive commentary that leads to improvements. Everything
you produce in this class will warrant the crown of a quality frame and is a credit both to your personal
development and to the effectual environment of this class.

You may start taking classes according to your own schedule. Classes are
open-ended, and you may stay for as long as you are benefiting. Initially,
I require that you commit yourself for a set of ten classes. This will
encourage you to press forward with your desire to develop your artistic
abilities in an atmosphere of mutual support and classroom harmony.
After completing ten classes, you may continue on a week by week basis.
My attendance policy is very generous to ensure that if you sign up for ten
classes, you will benefit from all of them. If for any reason you are unable
to attend a particular class, simply call me within 24 hours of the class,
and you may make up that class at the end of your set.

For those who desire career preparation, the master/apprentice
relationship has proven to be effective throughout the centuries. I will
make this opportunity available to a smaller group of four to six full time
students.  An hourly rate will apply for this extensive and expeditious
                                                  training.

I look forward to having you in my class. If your passion is to draw and paint people or animals, you have
come to a unique place where that desire will be cultivated and can grow to maturity.
